Technical Issues

I've installed my Videum and it's not working

  • Verify that the board is completely seated in the 16-bit or 32-bit (E)ISA slot inside your PC. These slots are usually black or brown. The board should be level and attached to the chassis using the mounting screw.
  • Verify that all of the cables are connected securely to the proper board. If you have a Winnov color video camera it must be connected to the MXC port on the Videum board. Connect the S-Video version to the S-Video port.
  • Verify that there is no other video capture card installed on the computer. If there is, remove the other card.
  • Reboot your computer after installation.

I'm not getting a video display (black screen).

  • Verify that your video source is properly connected to the Videum board and powered up.
  • Make sure the physical jack used for the connection is the same as the one selected on the Video Control panel.
Composite selects the RCA jack, S-Video selects the 4-pin mini-DIN, and MXC selects the multimedia extension connector.

My video is "scrambled."

If your video display is scrambled or video is displayed in the Video Control Panel but not in the application window, try the following:

  • Verify that your NTSC/PAL setting is correct for the type of camera you have (Videum AV/VO).
  • Verify that your video capture format is compatible with the applications; see the documentation for the application.
  • Verify the recommended image sizes and capture formats for the application.
  • Try uncompressed capture by setting the compression to YUY2 or RGBT.
  • Exit the application and restart the application.

My video looks very "grainy."

If your video display looks speckled or grainy, use the Windows Display control panel to adjust your display settings to view in High Color (16-bit) or True Color (24-bit).

I'm getting lots of "dropped frames" when I capture video.

If you are getting poor video capture performance, try the following:

  • Select the WNV1 hardware compression in the Video Control Panel.
  • Try defragmenting your hard disk.
  • Use the Video Control Panel to set a smaller image size.

I'm not getting any sound. What's the problem?

If you have no sound output, the following may help:

  • Verify that your speakers are properly installed and the volume is turned up.
  • If the speakers require external power, be sure they are connected to a power source.
  • If you have another audio board, use the Multimedia control panel to set the audio playback to the Videum board. Then select the Use Preferred Devices Only checkbox.
  • Use the Videum Audio Control Panel to verify that the speakers are turned on, the volume is set, and the speakers are not set for mute.
  • For Windows 95 only, verify that the SYSTEM.INI file has the following entry: [drivers] wave=moviea0.drv

I'm having difficulty recording and capturing audio. What do I do?

  • Verify that the audio input cable is connected securely to the Videum board. A mono audio source is only heard from the left speaker.
  • If you have another audio board, use the Wave Mapper (Windows 3.1) or the Multimedia control panel (Windows 95/NT) to verify that the Videum board is set for audio recording. Then select the correct audio source and recording levels. Set the recording source levels close to the peak loudness, and try again.

I have a VideumCam Traveler and Windows 95 doesn't recognize it. What do I do?

You probably have some type of PCMCIA card manager software running (card Works or Card Manager are two examples). These managers recognize the standard cards, like modems and network adapters, but not video capture cards. To fix the problem, go into the card manager software and tell it to let Windows control the Videum PCMCIA card.

After I install Videum software version 2.0, I get an error message that says "Can't register OCX." What does this mean?

It means that Active Movie is not on the system. Download Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.02 or later and install it. This will put Active Movie on your system, which is required for the Videum 2.0 software.

The audio is full of static. How can I fix this?

Static in the audio from a VCR or a headset is probably caused by using mono input instead of stereo. Try using stereo input.

My IBM Aptiva with Mwave has an I/O conflict with Videum VO. What can I do?

The Mwave board is a Plug-and-Play sound card and voice modem. If you remove it, install the Videum card, and then reinstall the Mwave card, everything will work.

I am getting a RUNDLL32.DLL error.

Upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.02 or later.

Enhancements

Does Videum support MMX-enhanced processors?

Absolutely! The better the system, the more enhanced the video quality. Winnov software is enhanced to support PCs with MMX. No matter what system you are using, Videum is designed to deliver excellent videoconferencing quality.

How can I get special cables to extend the camera's cable length or plug my camcorder into the MXC connector?

To extend the cable, you can use an Apple Image Writer printer cable, available at most computer and electronic stores.

Videum doesn't recognize MIDI files. How can I play them?

The MSMPEG4-V3 codec appeared in the beta phase of the Windows Media Tools, and was mainly intended for Microsoft/s new streaming media format .ASF. However this codec also worked with .AVI files. Since it had very good compression, even better than Intel/s i263, a lot of people started to use it when creating their .AVI material. However, later, when Microsoft released the official version of the Windows Media Tools, they included an MS MPEG4v3 driver that DID NOT work with .AVI/s, it only worked with .ASF files. The root of the problem is the MS MPEG4v3 driver (MPG4C32.DLL). Versions up to 4.00.0.3688 (from the last beta version of Windows Media Tools) DO WORK with v3 in .AVI/s. The version that is included in the now released version of Windows Media Tools (4.00.0.3845 or later) DO NOT work with .AVI/s.). This only affects MS-MPEG4V3 encoded avi/s. MS-MPEGV1 and MSMPEG-V2 can be used in avi, even with later versions of the driver. If you use one of the other codecs you should be able to capture video without any problems. We would suggest trying Microsoft video 1, Indeo , or Cinepak codecs.

Why am I not able to use the MPEG4 v3 compression codec to create avi files?

We've found a MIDI software package that works with Videum - WinnGroove.. Install WinGroove as playback devices in the Windows Device Manager. If selected as a virtual device, either will play back MIDI files through a sound card of your choice.

WinGroove is shareware by Hiroki Nakayama. It sounds identical to the Roland software, plus it has the advantage of letting you select the sound card you want to use--a key benefit if you have both Videum and a soundcard installed.

Third Part Software

Videoconferencing is not working for me--the connection keeps dying.

Currently, there are some compatibility problems between various modem brands that can cause connection problems. These compatibility problems have been reduced considerably over the past few months as various manufacturers have issued firmware upgrades; the problems will continue to diminish as the V.34 standard matures. Try going to http://www.sns-access.com/~netpro/maxmtu.htm to get increased modem speed. If that doesn't work, tweaking your initialization string may help work around the problem. This can be done by choosing the "Extra Settings" option in the Windows setup for your modem (instructions can be found in your modem's manual). If you can't find the initialization string, try AT&F1.

How can I speed up Microsoft NetMeeting?

Many factors can affect NetMeeting's frame rate and image quality. If you need more speed, you can "tweak" NetMeeting to get the best possible frame rate. Here are some tips:

  • More bandwidth is better. ISDN speeds or LAN speeds provide the best quality.
  • The processor power can make a big difference. An MMX processor is the best, although a Pentium 133 (at a minimum) or Pentium 90 will also work. Using a Pentium 75 or slower will often not be adequate for NetMeeting.
  • Use a small video size whenever possible because it's faster and the audio is better.
  • Increase the compression rate for faster speed. Set the compression rate by right-clicking on the video, choosing properties, and using the slider to choose a sharper video or faster frame. Always keep this on "faster video." If the video quality seems blurry, slide the slider to "better quality" (note: this may delay your audio a bit, depending on the processor).
  • Less movement increases the frame rate since videoconferencing compression is based on movement. The less you move, the smaller the amount of data that needs to be sent.
  • Less complex images increase the frame rate. You can improve the rate by pointing the camera at a white wall and by adjusting the lighting and the camera.
  • Audio quality also affects the speed. Use a headset or microphone with anti-noise and anti-echoing circuitry. This way NetMeeting doesn't need to use bandwidth to send audio "noise."
  • Set the Windows Desktop to 16-bit color.

I get an echo of my voice when I videoconference from the remote end. How can I fix this?

Having each party use a headset can eliminate the echo. We recommend the models from Andrea Electronics http://www.andreaelectronics.com. Andrea is offering Winnov customers a 10% discount if you give them the "WIN1" code at ordering time.
